Kathon CG Description
Kathon™ CG is the trade name for a combination of the synthetic preservatives methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, which are used in both rinse-off and leave-on cosmetics, the latter being a greater risk for skin.Introduced into cosmetics in the mid-1970s, this duo elicited a great number of sensitizations in consumers, many serious enough that consumers reported them to cosmetic regulatory agencies. Numerous studies have since shown that its use leads to contact dermatitis and general skin irritation.
This newer, cumulative information led to it not being included in cosmetics other than rinse-off products. This blend is used in many products instead of parabens, despite the fact that parabens have a better safety track record and lower incidence of causing a sensitizing reaction.
Specific to each, methylchloroisothiazolinone is very effective against a broad range of pathogens. In contrast, methylisothiazolinone is active against bacteria but considered weak on controlling fungi. Use levels of each tend to be limited to 0.01% or less, and preferably only in rinse-off products.
